CBT Therapy for Health Anxiety

Health Anxiety (sometimes called hypochondria) is when you spend most of the time worrying, you are ill, or about getting ill, until it starts to take over your life.  Constantly worry about your health often leads to a preoccupation with your body and looking for signs of illness.

You would recognise this in yourself if you are frequently checking your body for signs of illness, such as lumps, tingling or pain. Often then finding yourself seeking reassurance from others such as family members or medical professionals that everything is ok.

When health anxiety takes hold, you may find you become obsessed with looking at health information on the internet or in the media.  Then beginning to avoid anything to do with serious illness, such as medical TV programes, and sometimes then begin to act as if you were ill (for example, avoiding physical activities)

Anxiety itself can cause symptoms like headaches or a racing heartbeat, and you may mistake these for signs of illness.  This is turn, causes you to check for other symptoms, read up and find out more about the illness, focus your attention on body sensations, and continually scan your body for sensations or more symptoms.

Our team of therapists are experienced in helping people understand Health Anxiety and manage the symptoms.

Following a comprehensive assessment each therapist is able to identify the course of treatment which often involves focusing on and challenging the unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, and gradually changing our behaviors (the checking, reassurance-seeking, avoidance etc).

Each session will have a small homework task that will help you progress in recognising that it is anxiety and worry about our health that makes us feel the way we do, rather than having a serious illness.

We help, individuals, couples, children (7+) and specialise in helping individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

We are all fully qualified CBT Psychotherapists with University Degrees in addition to our 2 years CBT Training.

We are all fully accredited members of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies.

Impossible Mental Health Limited is fully insured both professionally and clinically with Zurich Insurance.

How is it funded?

Therapy can be funded privately by card payment or through your personal/employee Health Insurance policy.
